Agia Marina Leros

agia marinaAgia Marina is a delightful small town, a group of houses in the typical Dodecanese style built in a row by the sea and unravel from the pier up to Platanos and Panteli on one side and reach Alinda from the other. It is one of the most favorite places for a morning walk, to sit and watch the catamaran that arrives and leave while drinking a coffee sitting in one of the two cafes of the small square. Sometimes the ships fail to land in Agia Marina because of the winds and then Lakki is the gateway to the island, which is the main port.

The Port of Agia Marina is located below the castle of Panagia to the north of Platanos while to the south is Panteli. All three areas are united in a settlement that spreads below the castle of Panagia.
Agia Marina, where the church of the same name is located, is the center of Leros’ nightlife with several bars and Greek restaurants.

The best time to go to Agia Marina is early in the morning around 10 am when the fish market is full of fresh fish next to the Traditional Market. there you can enjoy your breakfast with coffee and delicacies from Traditional, Glaros or Harama, buy fish and take a walk on the promenade of Agia Marina and if you want to surf the internet in the alternative.

In the bakery you will find fresh fragrant bread and cheese pies. At the end of the port of Agia Marina above the carnagio is the ancient fortress of Bourtzi. Moving towards the side that goes towards Alinda there is a beautiful little beach for swimming facing the Watermill of Agia Marina, one of the most photographed spots of the island.

Shopping

In Agia Marina you will find shops and supermarkets as well as fishing supplies. In Agia Marina is the police station of Leros, the post office and several tax offices. There is one ATMs at the port next to the tourist office. The facilities of Radio Leros are located in the old customs house and cultural events are often held in the hall below.

Where to Eat

For a budget meal of Gyros or souvlaki try the grill house Kroupia, the cafe Glaros offers all kind of omelettes and full breakfast as well as snacks and sandwiches. For pastries, local macarunes and Lerian pies try Paradosiakon. Opposite the post office try the Pizzeria Fournos.

Nightlife

Agia Marina is the top noch spot for nightlife in Leros. Most of the bars are here. Some of the nest include Meltemi one of the oldest music bars aof the island and Faros at the end of the port.
